Best Taco Restaurants (not food trucks) in Salt Lake City

Tacos have been a staple in Mexican cuisine for centuries, and have been enjoyed in Salt Lake City, Utah for many years. The history of tacos in Salt Lake City is likely tied to the history of Mexican immigration to the area. Mexican immigrants began to arrive in Salt Lake City during the early 20th century, and over time, they have established themselves as a vital part of the community, bringing with them their culture, customs, and of course, their cuisine.

The first record of a taco stand in Salt Lake City was in the 1920s, and since then, the city has seen a steady growth in the number of Mexican restaurants, taquerias, and food trucks, which offer a variety of taco options such as carne asada, al pastor, and carnitas. Tacos are now a popular street food in Salt Lake City.

In recent years, the city has seen a rise in authentic Mexican taco trucks and street vendors, which has brought a new level of authenticity and diversity to the taco scene in Salt Lake City. The city also has a number of traditional and modern Mexican restaurants, which offer their own unique take on tacos, using fresh ingredients and creative combinations of flavors.

One of my go to places after a day of skiing is Taco Taco in Salt Lake City. It is a small restaurant with only a couple of tables that offers delicious tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Order at the counter in the back where you can expect quick service and friendly staff. Pair your meal with chips and guacamole and be prepared to sit on their patio to people watch with a margarita. From zucchini blossoms to chicken mole, they have something for everyone. Your meal isn’t complete without a visit to the street cart style toppings cart. There you can find traditional toppings from cilantro, jalapeños, white onion, lime, and cucumbers and a whole lot more. Then finish it off with a variety of salsas ranging from tame to deliciously spicy.

Located on the one way street of 500 south this restaurant is right across the street from the Leonardo Museum which is adjacent to the Salt Lake Public Library. In the winters you can catch a Sundance movie and stop in for a quick taco or in the summers you can stroll the Arts Festival and not have to be forced into their limited selection of fried food and pizza.  If you’re in the downtown Salt Lake area looking for a great lunch or dinner spot you should look no further than taco taco.

Next on my list is De Los Muertos located in the neighborhood of Sugarhouse in Salt Lake City. This spot has a wonderful outdoor patio and you order on an ipad inside. The restaurant is a modern, fresh twist on Mexican favorites like tacos, burritos (breakfast burritos served All Day), salsa, guacamole. They have great Craft cocktails and a wide selection of craft beer. I can easily bike over to this spot and grab a quick meal as they feature amazing chips and fantastic Birria tacos. This spot is not to be missed.

I’m saving the best for last, check out Facil Taqueria located in the area of Holladay which is a great stop for an after ski or mountain bike meal when coming down little or big cottonwood canyon. This place was once a food truck but has now turned into a restaurant with craft cocktails and incredible tacos such as Nashville hot chicken tacos, Beer battered fish tacos, spicy cauliflower & avocado tacos and more. Also don’t miss their hot wings, you can see them smoking them when you pull in to their parking lot.
