The city of Fruita is located in Mesa County, Colorado. Fruita is one of the first towns beyond Moab on i80 and is down the street from Grand Junction. Fruita is right on the border of Utah and resides in Colorado. Fruita. Our first time to the area we scoured the foothills looking for 18 road. It was easy to find but in the dark we were confused, tired, and just ready to crash for the night it took us longer than expected.
There are plenty of signs if you are looking for the mountain bike area. From town center go east on Aspen, take a left on Maple, Take a right on K6/10 road and take a left on 18 road until it ends. 18 road is partially paved then turns into a dirt washboard road. At the end of the road is a wide graded campground where you can do bike laps from. But If you can’t find camping in that main zone there is plenty of overflow camping on BLM land a mile back down the road.
Cell service is hit or miss for us even on Verizon and AT&T so we reside to playing chess and listening to music on our gen1 ipod. This place is safe but don’t think that you can drive through a mud puddle in the middle of nowhere with or without 4×4 drive. We watched a truck send it through a clay cement mud pit and had to push it out because we were the closest campers around. I climbed up to my knees in clay struggling to get this jackass out of the puddle with not even a thank you from him or his girlfriend.
Note:
Always bring tow straps, buy AAA roadside insurance and of course always bring extra snacks and water. You never know when you could be stuck some place for a while.
