Little Grand Canyon, Utah.

Little Grand Canyon is one of Utah’s hidden gems. Located near the San Rafael Swell, this dramatic overlook offers sweeping views of colorful badlands, winding canyons, and rugged desert cliffs without the crowds found in Utah’s national parks. The first time I visited, I couldn’t believe how few people were there. The landscape stretches for miles in every direction, making it one of those places where you can simply sit on the edge of the canyon and watch the light change across the desert.

What to Expect.

The drive to Little Grand Canyon is part of the adventure. Gravel roads lead through open desert before arriving at the rim of the canyon. There are no visitor facilities, so plan to bring plenty of water, snacks, and anything else you’ll need for the day. Dispersed camping is available nearby, making it an excellent place to spend the night under some of the darkest skies in Utah.

Photography and Petroglyphs.

Little Grand Canyon is one of my favorite photography locations in Utah. Early morning and late evening create long shadows that bring out the texture of the sandstone formations. After a rainstorm, the colors become even richer, with deep reds, oranges, and purples stretching across the landscape. If you’re interested in night photography, this area also offers outstanding opportunities for photographing the Milky Way.

Things to Do Nearby.

Little Grand Canyon is close to many of the San Rafael Swell’s best destinations. Spend the day exploring scenic backroads, hiking slot canyons, discovering ancient rock art, or camping beneath the desert stars. It’s an excellent base for anyone looking to experience one of Utah’s most underrated landscapes

Best Time to Visit.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring the desert. Summer afternoons can become extremely hot, while winter occasionally brings snow that creates a beautiful contrast against the red sandstone.

Final Thoughts.

Little Grand Canyon is proof that some of Utah’s best landscapes are still relatively unknown. If you’re looking for incredible views, free camping, and a quieter desert experience, this is a place that’s well worth adding to your road trip through the San Rafael Swell.
